3am thoughts on love

essay

there’s a version of love nobody writes about at a reasonable hour.

it’s the one that shows up at 3am,
when your body is too tired to lie
and your mind is too awake to stop.
it’s not the love of poems or playlists.
it’s the love that sits across from fear
and doesn’t know which one of them got there first.

here’s what i think happens.

you meet someone. and they are good.
not good in the way the world sells it,
not perfect, not a movie, not a fix for the broken parts.
just good. warm in a way that reaches you
before you’ve decided to let it in.

and instead of opening the door, you build another wall.

not because you don’t want them.
because you do.
and wanting is the thing that has cost you before.

this is the part nobody talks about.
the fear of love is not the fear of being alone.
it’s the fear of being close enough to be broken
by someone who didn’t even mean to.
it’s the fear of handing someone the softest version of you
and watching them not know what to do with it.

so you resist.
you stay half in and half out.
you give just enough to feel something
but not enough to lose anything,
and you call this being careful
when really it is just being afraid
with a better vocabulary.

the walls are the cruelest trick of all.
you built them to protect yourself
and they did.
they protected you from the thing
you wanted the most.
they kept you safe and they kept you empty
and those turned out to be the same thing.

and then there’s the other side of it.
the person in front of you
who has their own walls, their own 3am,
their own version of this exact paragraph.
someone who has been hurt enough times
to stop believing that love is worth the risk.
someone who has lost hope quietly,
not in one dramatic moment
but in a hundred small ones
where nobody showed up.

and you want to show them the other side.
you want to say, it’s still there, it still works,
love is still the thing it was supposed to be.
but you can’t say that
when you’re standing behind your own wall saying it.
the words don’t carry through stone.

this is the real tragedy of love at 3am.
two people, both wanting it, both afraid of it,
both building walls in the same room
and wondering why they can’t reach each other.

the walls are a shield. yes.
but a shield held long enough
stops being protection and starts being a cage.
you are holding it so tight
your hands have forgotten what it feels like
to hold anything else.

i think love is not the absence of fear.
i think it never was.
i think love is the moment you put the shield down
knowing full well you might get hurt,
and deciding that the chance of being known,
really known, not the version, not the performance,
but the 3am version, the breathless version,
the version that doesn’t have it together,
is worth more than the safety of the wall.

i don’t know if that’s brave or stupid.
i think it might be both.
i think everything worth doing is both.

it’s 3am. these are just thoughts.
but they’re the truest ones i have right now,
and that has to count for something.
